Another Old Story

ONE OF MY OLD STORIES
For my fortieth birthday a friend of mine, who is a private pilot, flew the two of us to Washington D.C. for a meeting we had and a Monday Night Redskins football game against the Eagles. The Skins won in a shutout. We arrived at Reagan, back then National Airport, shortly after 5 pm sandwiched among many commercial planes at rush hour. Once on the ground the friend suggested I taxi the plane into the terminal, this did not last long, in that I kept running off the runway and the pilot is not known for his tolerance of less than perfect performance. We took a cab into the District and my always gregarious friend and I struck up an entertaining conversation with the driver on the economics of being a cabbie in D.C. and found he made a pretty decent living, liked his work and was able to provide well for his family. At the game that evening my friend and I were invited into the press box to share pizza and ribs with former Redskins’ Stars and now play by play and color commentators, Sonny Jurgenson and Sam Huff. A pretty cool NFL half time experience, even for a couple of fortyish ex jocks as we were. When we knocked on the door of the Press Box at RFK Stadium the door was opened by a very young man with a look on his face like we were uninvited interlopers. We gave him our names and told him we had been invited by Sam. He said,” stay out here” and literally slammed the door in our faces, after several minutes he returned to open the door  while not saying a word but looking down his nose disgustingly at us. While noshing on the ribs Sonny says to me, “so how are you enjoying the game?’ I say it is all great except the punk kid who is working the door acts like he owns the place” this drew a quick smile and look between Sam and Sonny and then a laugh. So I inquire as to what was humorous. Sam says, “he is Jack Kent Cooke’s grandson(longtime Redskins owner),so he he does own it all.” Today my friend returns to Washington. This time to be sworn in as West Virginia’s and the Nation’s newest US Senator, if the other 99 Senators can be as good and effective person as he, our Nation will be a much better place and we will soon be out of this mess that we are suffering through.
